Second Order Analysis and Design of Steel Structures
Introduction
This one day course presents a comprehensive treatment of the second order analysis and design of steel structures. An overview of the provisions of Eurocode 3, an explanation of the various types of structural analysis and conventional design to Eurocode 3 will first be covered. Emphasis will then be placed on advanced analysis and design techniques including the treatment of frame and member imperfections, second order P-∆ and P-δ effects and the interpretation of analysis results. Using advanced second order analyses, with imperfections, the need to estimate effective lengths and conduct individual member buckling checks is removed, since this behaviour is already captured in the analysis. Only cross-section checks need to be made. Practical worked examples and exercises using both traditional and advanced design methods will be given, and all delegates will receive a trial version of the nonlinear analysis software NIDA, which has been applied to design of a number of steel structures without the need to assume member effective lengths.
